Bohemian Makeup in Plums & Crimsons

This past week I felt the urge to paint my nails a shocking shade of turquoise. And so it begins. Spring is on its way. But I can't but feel that the gorgeously brooding cold-weather shades of plum and oxblood that I love haven't had their moment in the winter sun on this blog, so today I'm going to pay tribute to those sumptuous shades before it's too late.

I also have to mention, before we go any further, I have to credit my major source of inspiration for this particular look. I was recently walking on the street here in New York and an international magazine store caught my eye. Upon closer inspection of the window, I saw a magazine that I knew I had to have. It's called In Beauty, it cost $40 and I regret nothing. Within its glossy pages are the most inspiring and forward-thinking makeup looks from the Spring/Summer 2015 Couture Runways. Don't worry, I plan to do plenty more looks inspired by this magazine, so you'll get to see more of it soon!

The look I'm adapting is from the Franck Sorbier runway. The only downside to this magazine is that it doesn't always mention the makeup artist (kind of a glaring omission in a magazine focusing on some of the most inspired makeup in the world) so I've gone on a bit of an internet pilgrimage trying to find the makeup artist for this show. I couldn't find any mentions of a makeup artist for this season's show, but I found mentions of makeup artist Yann Boussand Larcher in some of his earlier work; based on his site, it seems possible he could've done this look. Even if the makeup wasn't conceived and created by him, I think we can all agree that his work is stunning, and I'll most likely do some posts inspired by his other work soon.

The magazine describes this look as 19th Century Bohemian; I love that reference but for me it also evokes the '20s in the use of headbands and the shape of the eye makeup. In adapting this look for a potentially wearable look, I went a bit lighter on the eyes both in the shades used and in the sheer volume of product used; Franck Sorbier's models' eyes are completely covered in browns and purples from lashline to brow, while I kept a bit of a brow highlight. Also, the models' brows are nearly untouched, save for a pencil-thin line of pencil on the very top of the brow, calling back to the 20's once again. You can see in the below photos that I used this same method, but brushed the line out considerably. This way, the powder strengthens my natural brow but is less costume-y.

I completely eschewed blush in favor of some contouring to reference the bohemian, starving artist aesthetic. Lastly, while the models' lips are brick red bordering on chocolate brown, I added a bit more red to keep the glamor factor.
