My Pixelated Halloween Costume

Happy Sunday-after-Halloween everyone! I hope you had a raucous and safe Halloween. As this holiday was approaching last week, I realized I didn't have any plans to go out so I was imagining that I would just create a face-only costume to post here. But then I was invited to a small party at a friend's place so I had to come up with a quick costume. While browsing Instagram for ideas, I saw pixelated makeup and thought, "there must be some pixel-print clothing out there somewhere." Luckily I found some and this look came together.

Make your own lipstick palette

Last week I was salivating over Bobbi Brown's stinking gorgeous lip palette, trying to fabricate a reason I needed it right then and there. I even looked at the customizable but equally costly freedom system from Inglot. I knew in the back of my mind that a) I couldn't afford either and b) I probably owned most of the shades in it from a variety of brands from Revlon to Bobbi to MAC, and decided to just make my own palette. The last time I was packing up for a makeup job, I felt so scattered trying to decide which lipsticks I needed to bring and wanted to find a way to simplify the process. Off I went to Amazon to find the perfect blank palette.

Alternatives to Black Liner

There's nothing like a stroke of black liquid liner, except when every day is a stroke of black liquid liner. When my beloved black liner feels stale, I break out some more colorful options. And while I love a shrieking cobalt jolt of pigment, there are lots of gorgeous neutral or neutral-ish eyeliner options if you're not ready for a smack of color. Here, I go over a few of my favorite non-black neutral eyeliners for fall.

Finding Your Undertone: A Colorful Journey That Matters As Much As You Want It To

If I were to rummage through your closet and makeup collection, what colors would I find? Lots of browns, yellows and earthy greens? There's a good chance you have warm, peachy or yellow undertones in your skin. A collection of bright whites, purples and blues? Better chance you have cool, blue or pink tones to your skin. No cohesive color palette? You either have neutral undertones or are confused; I was in the latter boat for years.

Sweat-Proof Makeup Two Ways

It's been insanely hot in New York for the last week or two, so my hot-weather makeup techniques have been truly put to the test. I'm happy to report that these tricks have ensured that I end each workday looking nearly the same as when I started it! Below, find more information about the two looks I created. Both are super-quick and require minimal makeup tools, but one is a soft, neutral look while the other is more dramatic.

Futuristic Fairy Princess: An Experimental, Otherwordly Look with Blue, Green & Purple

There are a few products in my collection that I adore but rarely find an occasion to use, so today I thought I'd try to use them all at once! Because I was just using colors and textures that I like, I'm not quite sure what to call this creation. If I had to name it, I'd go for: Futuristic Fairy Princess. I'd also wanted to continue to play wit the graphic cut crease trend that's been all over runways for a while now. I tried a similarly graphic look this time last year, that was a little more sleek-feeling, whereas this feel a bit more whimsical and fairy princess to me. Interesting how a tiara-like headband can make anything feel like a princess look, isn't it?

From Natural to Neon: Making Up My Friend Maria

I'd been wanting to try some makeup trends on my beautiful friend Maria for some time. Not only does she have naturally insane cheekbones, but also a killer sense of style that lets her pull off nearly any look she chooses. So, using those two facts about her as jumping-off points, I wanted to start the day with a super natural no-makeup makeup look, and then graduate to using some really bright, summery colors.

Meeting my makeup inspiration, Lisa Eldridge

I met my idol today. Since I began watching her videos maybe a year and a half ago, I've gone from makeup lover to aspiring makeup artist, in part because of the grace and intelligence she demonstrates in the industry. If Youtube had a feature that showed you how many times you'd viewed a single video, I'd guess some of hers would inch up towards 20 in my account. If I'm ever having a hard time explaining a makeup technique to someone, or if I'm not sure what to tell them, I simply advise they they look up her videos. When I do give advice, I'd say 8/10 times I'm paraphrasing something I've hear her say. Her name is Lisa Eldridge, and I'd basically like to be her someday.

A Colorful Pixelated Eye

Hello, strangers! I have to begin with two apologies: first for such a long absence, and second for a half-assed return. I've planned to create a look and post for the past several weeks, but what can I say? Life's gotten in the way. Don't worry, it's been in good ways! But in any case, enough excuses. I think this look has been germinating in my mind since my Halloween post, when I had a great time using mesh as a stencil on my cheekbones. I've wanted to translate that disjointed, almost pixelated quality to my entire face since using color instead of iridescence. I didn't have time to complete that look this weekend, but just couldn't wait to do a test drive tonight after work on my eyes. So here's a little taste of something bigger to come! Here's to recommitting to our passions.

Products used:

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion
  • NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk
  • Smashbox Eyeshadow in Butter

  • MAC Eye Shadow in Atlantic Blue and Goldenrod

Light Blue Cut Crease: A Minimalist Spring Eye

I've been drooling over runway makeup lately; there are so many gorgeous and inventive ideas that use makeup in a dramatic yet modern way. The notion of wearing little makeup aside from a slash of orange pigment along the eye, as Peter Som did, is so refreshing and bold!

Bohemian Makeup in Plums & Crimsons

This past week I felt the urge to paint my nails a shocking shade of turquoise. And so it begins. Spring is on its way. But I can't but feel that the gorgeously brooding cold-weather shades of plum and oxblood that I love haven't had their moment in the winter sun on this blog, so today I'm going to pay tribute to those sumptuous shades before it's too late.
