Mermaid Eyes

A friend of mine recently gave me a stunning iridescent shadow from MAC's Alluring Aquatic Collection. It's their Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Zestful, which looks almost cream-colored in low light but when the sun hits it, a gorgeous green sheen emerges. When I first saw it, I thought, "This is the product a mermaid would choose if she visited a MAC store," and I've been dreaming of this look ever since.

I rounded out the look with a couple of turquoise shades from my Smashbox and Sephora palettes, a mauvy shadow for some extra depth and my Clinique gel liner, which sadly is showing its age and looking quite dried out. Time for a new black gel liner! Does anyone have any favorites to recommend?

Hope you enjoy this colorful, summery look!

Products used:

  • MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Zestful

I started out as I like to when creating a really dramatic shape: by mapping it out lightly with some grey liner pencil. Then, knowing that I wanted a bit of shading around that shape, I blended a bit of mauvey-pink shadow around the line. Finally, I blended a bit more with a nude shadow & used a pointed Q tip dipped in makeup remover to clean up the line.

Then I began carefully filling in my shape with the turquoise shadow...

And blending it downwards with a clean brush. You can see here that this color is very pretty but the shadow doesn't go on very smoothly; I'll fix that later with the Azure shadow, which is much more highly pigmented.

MAC's Zestful is so glittery that it doesn't go on very heavily on its own, so I used Inglot's Duraline to make the glitter more intense. I dropped a dot of it onto the back of my hand, dipped my ring finger in it and used it to pick up the MAC shadow and pack as much onto my lid as possible.

Next I drew on my cateyes with my sad, dried out Clinique Gel Liner and a pointed liner brush. After this step, I also went into the fix the patchy turquoise parts with Smashbox's shadow in Azure.

And after tightlining my top lashline and applying mascara & false lashes, that about does it! I kept the brows very natural to keep them from competing with this dramatic eye.

And here is my Sephora palette with the shades I used! That mauvey-pink in the top left was used above the turquoise; the bright turquoise was used to fill in most of the graphic cat-eye shape and on the lower lashline; and the light blue was used in the inner corner. The nude shade was used for a bit of blending and highlighting. Thanks for reading & don't forget to comment with your favorite gel liner!
